How does it work?
US Academic Triathlon allows a maximum of 5 students to compete together as a team at any meet, but you may have extra students (up to 2, called alternates) registered with your team in case of illnesses or other schedule conflicts.
Teams compete at two levels, Challenger (5th-6th grade) and Cross-Trainer (7th-8th grade) to make sure the competition stays fair while covering the variety of different levels of knowledge and skills that students may exhibit during middle school years.
When we make the competition schedule we do our best to limit travel for each school, but the best way to limit how far you have to go is to encourage more teams within your district or within the neighboring district.
Each team needs a coach as well as students, so active parents, involved teachers or other adult volunteers must also be registered as part of this process. Find out more about Coaching a Team.

What do the team fees cover?
Each team of 5 to 7 students is guaranteed four opportunities to compete, and many move on to the State competition in the spring. All meet content is individually written, tested, formatted, printed, and shipped. In addition, team fees support production and implementation of the annual Minnesota State competition, which includes renting the space, paying for security and cleanup, hiring a photographer, and providing snacks for our volunteers and competitors. Fees also help cover ribbons, certificates, and trophies for the top teams throughout the season.
